Suni Harford became an investment banker in the late 1980s, when women, still a rarity on the trading floor, all wore stockings, pumps, and blue pinstripe skirts. “I remember when the first woman wore a pantsuit,” Harford says, laughing. “And now I can wear jeans every day.” With a career that spans the advent of the internet to the rise of the Robinhood app and beyond, Harford, who spent 24 years with Citi and is now the president of asset management for multinational investment bank UBS, has seen her industry change in dramatic ways—and never more quickly than over the last year and a half. The pandemic, a broad social movement for equality and inclusion, and greater access to investment markets are “driving companies to make change,” Harford says. “These conversations are now front and center.”
